Beyond the Surface — Contemporary Abstract Scottish Landscape Art

Beyond the Surface is a vibrant contemporary abstract landscape inspired by the colours, light and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands and lochs.

The painting combines a recognisable distant landscape with a bold, highly abstract foreground. Deep blues and turquoise create the loch and distant hills, while intense areas of gold, orange, red, green, purple and silver break across the foreground in energetic geometric shapes and expressive texture.

The contrast between the calmer distance and the fractured foreground creates a strong sense of depth and movement. Sweeping lines, repeated colours and layered forms guide the eye through the composition towards the water and light beyond.

Created alongside the blog article “How to Look at a Painting Like an Artist,” Beyond the Surface explores the idea that a painting can be seen in more than one way — first as a landscape, and then as an arrangement of shape, colour, line, texture and space.
